چکیده

Introduction: The results presented here are part of an investigation into the evolution of hydrothermal events associated with the Chicxulub impactites in Yu-catan, Mexico. The study focuses on alteration products in core samples recovered from the Yaxcopoil-1 drill hole, which is located some 60 kilometers from the center of the impact structure. This research contributes to the growing knowledge-base of post-impact hydrothermal systems [e.g. 1, 2] and their importance as potential life-originating environments [3]. Macro-scopic and petrographic descriptions, as well as preliminary electron microprobe and RAMAN spectrome-try analyses, thus far, indicate a systematic spatial and temporal distribution of hydrothermal products in the Yaxcopoil-1 core. Protolith: To understand the sequence of replacement by hydrothermal products it was necessary to assess the original mineralogy of the altered proto-lith. At the Yaxcopoil-1 site, a green melt unit is composed of microcrystalline plagioclase, clinopyroxene, K feldspar, and a silicate phase, potentially glass, that has been pervasively replaced by phyllosilicates. Cli-nopyroxenes contain a small fraction of sodium (Aeg 1

Stable Isotope Record of Post-impact Fluid Activity in the Chicxulub Crater as Exposed by the Yaxcopoil-1 Borehole

Introduction: Cavities of secondary calcite and veins of secondary anhydrite and quartz in the Yuca-tan-6 borehole drilled into the Chicxulub structure suggested the impact generated a hydrothermal system [1, 2]. Based on work at other craters, mostly Siljan and Puchezh-Katunki [3, 4], we estimate this system could be several kilometers deep in the center of the crater and may extend to the rim...

Constraints for Modeling Chemical Transport during Hydrothermal Alteration in Large and Small Impact Craters

Introduction: Modeling of hydrothermal alteration has progressed greatly in recent years. One of the next challenges for modeling is to explain the observations of elemental transport observed in terrestrial impact craters. We present data from our work that illustrates some of the evidence for impact craters of different sizes. For the large, 180-200 km diameter, Chicxulub impact crater, data ...

Hydrothermal Alteration of the Impactites at the Icdp Drill Site Yax-1

Introduction. About 100 m of impactites (suevitetype breccias) have been drilled at the ICDP drill site Yax-1 within the Chicxulub impact structure (see [1] for more information). Post-impact hydrothermal alteration including alkali metasomatism and devitrification of impact melt glass has significantly modified the mineralogy and chemistry of the impact breccia lithologies. Hydrothermal altera...

Chicxulub impact predates the K-T boundary mass extinction.

Since the early l990s the Chicxulub crater on Yucatan, Mexico, has been hailed as the smoking gun that proves the hypothesis that an asteroid killed the dinosaurs and caused the mass extinction of many other organisms at the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) boundary 65 million years ago. Here, we report evidence from a previously uninvestigated core, Yaxcopoil-1, drilled within the Chicxulub crater, i...
